Greetings Crossing Park Families:

We welcome families in the coming days for parent-teacher conferences.

Our Role:

Establishing a safe, happy, learning environment is our fundamental goal as a school.

As parents, it would be natural to wonder: "Is Crossing Park School a good school?"

As the principal, I speak with confidence on this matter.   We are always looking to make improvements and solve problems.   However, we have much to celebrate and be proud of!

We have wonderful clubs, sports teams and students who speak multiple languages.   Academically and socially, we many areas where average are above national and provincial averages in a number of areas and showing academic improvements in key areas, too.

Your Role:

Parents play a big role in education.   You can help your child by practicing speaking English, reading with your children, asking them questions about the topics and terms.  These are easy and helpful examples to help students- backed by research.

As a CBE school, we do not expect parents to teach the children- that's our responsibility!   As such, we make every attempt to have schoolwork completed in a rigorous and efficient manner at school.    CBE Schools suggest that students from K-9 work on schoolwork at home anywhere from 5-10 minutes of review and discussion in early elementary to " one-half to one hour per school night" at the Junior High level.   This means we aim to have students complete almost all of their work and studies at school.

While not every family can support students in the same way (many people have long work hours and unique circumstances) basic and respectful support is expected and is legislated in the Alberta School Act.

It is important that parents be aware of parent responsibilities outlined in the Act, section 16.2: A parent of a student has the responsibility:

(a) to take an active role in the student's educational success, including assisting the student...

(b) to ensure the parent's conduct contributes to a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment

(c) to co-operate and collaborate with school staff to support the delivery of specialized supports and services to the student

(d) to encourage, foster and advance collaborative, positive and respectful relationships with teachers, principals, other school staff and professionals providing supports and services in the school, and

(e) to engage in the student's school community.

We appreciate you contributing to our fundamental mission for staff and students alike- safe, happy, learning.  This is teamwork at times and we look forward to seeing you in the coming days- or an alternative time if you are unable to attend.

Again, our students are the future.   Thanks in advance for your support as we continue to make this school even better!

Yours in teamwork,
